On the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights, had things really gotten better for human kind? Has the US upheld its own principles? Chomsky tackles these topics and more in his speech Case Studies in Hypocrisy: US Human Rights Policy. He shows that the US has continually violated its own standards, both in regards to economics, and in regards to international relations. The issues he addresses are relevant today, and probably why we are in the problems that we’re in. “If you think it through, and it’s not a very hard job, you learn an important lesson, one that ought to be taught in eighth grade civics and graduate departments of political science. It’s a lesson that the powerful rarely express with such vulgar clarity: their total contempt for democracy and their fear and hatred of the great beast, the public.” –Noam Chomsky, from the CD. “The threat of democracy is quite real to the serious guys who are used to doing deals behind closed doors and then having them rubber-stamped.
